The 1994 World Cup was not without its controversy and heartbreak. Wednesday, we looked at the massacre in County Down which occurred; today we look at another death that was a result of the 1994 tournament. This time, it was a player.

Andrés Escobar was a Colombian player who made his debut for the national team in 1988. He was a defender who was described as a team player, one who always gave his best. Like many defenders, he was a player the rest of the team relied on heavily.

He was twenty-seven when he was selected as part of Colombia’s World Cup squad in the USA.
