Angela Samota was born in September 1964 in Alameda, California. She studied computer science and electrical engineering in Dallas, where she became a sister of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Her friends described her as friendly and an intelligent academic who always worked hard. 

On 12th August 1984, she visited the state fair with two friends. Her boyfriend Ben McCall had been invited, but he declined the offer as he had work the next day. After the fair, they went to the Rio room dance club; she drove everyone home calling in at McCall's on the way.

At 0145, McCall received a phone call from Samota in a state of panic. She said there was a man at her apartment; he had asked to use the phone and toilet; she had let him in. She asked McCall about a local payphone and appeared to relay this information to the visitor. She then abruptly hung up, saying she would call McCall back in a couple of minutes. She never rang back.
