Mary Bateman was born Mary Harker in 1768; she was the daughter of a farmer in North Yorkshire. At a young age, she went to work as a servant girl. She was released from service for petty theft at the age of 10. Following this career, she became a minor thief and con artist.

When she was twenty-four, she had a brief courtship with John Bateman. Mary had used her charms on him. She convinced him to move around quite a bit when her schemes caught up with her. Others started labelling her the Yorkshire witch and fearing her.

She would convince her victims that she possessed supernatural powers. By the end of the century, she had established herself as a prominent fortune teller in Leeds. She would go as far as prescribing potions for her followers, which she claimed would ward off evil spirits. It wasn’t long until she escalated to murder.
